Program Provides Energy Assistance to Millions of Families in Crisis
Ever since its establishment during President Ronald Reagan’s administration, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program has helped reduce energy burdens for millions of Americans in crisis. The program has proven to be one of the nation’s most cost-effective assistance.
Over time LIHEAP has received bipartisan support while undergoing updates and improvements. However, in recent years funding has fallen by a third from $5.1 billion in 2009 to $3.4 billion.The fiscal year 2018 national budget proposes to continue deep cuts or eliminate LIHEAP entirely.
Entergy has been a long-standing supporter of LIHEAP, most recently participating in LIHEAP Action Day in March on Capitol Hill to urge congressional leaders to sustain funding.
